Waimea Middle School invites the community to a “spoken word” performance with teaching artist Myrlin Hepworth and Waimea Middle School students on Wednesday.

Waimea Middle School invites the community to a “spoken word” performance with teaching artist Myrlin Hepworth and Waimea Middle School students on Wednesday.

“Spoken word,” also known as slam poetry, has become a popular style of storytelling that reaches across generations, as well as cultural and economic backgrounds. Its popularity, and the success of Hepworth in speaking to audiences about tough subjects, including self respect, anti-bullying, diversity and tolerance, inspired Waimea Middle School to invite him to come work with students in language arts classes to find and share their “voice” and views about life and their future.

Hepworth and students will share their creative work with fellow students, families and the community from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at Kahilu Threatre. The presentation is free. Doors open at 5:45 p.m.
